Figure 11.1 Newton’s second law of motion states that acceleration is proportional to the applied force if the mass or weight of the object is unchanged. (a) A light spring exerts a weaker force and leads to smaller acceleration. (b) A heavy spring exerts a stronger force and leads to a higher acceleration so that the object moves farther in the same time.
Although it seems mathematical, we can ignore the math, because the meaning of this can be understood in common sense intuitive terms. Let us first be clear about what these three words mean, and nothing could be easier because they mean exactly the same thing in physics as they do in their common usage in everyday life. Force is what we apply on things or on people to make them move or behave the way we want them to. Mass is the amount of matter contained in an object and is proportional to its weight—thus a heavier object has more mass than a lighter one. Acceleration is the change in velocity or speed—like when we increase the speed of our car—that is why the gas pedal is called the accelerator.
